U.S. Futsal, US Soccer and the California legal community lost a man that devoted a lot of his life for Soccer and Futsal.  John Murphy served for many years as a soccer referee and high-level administrator both in the outdoor game and in Futsal.  He served as a State Referee, referee instructor and referee assessor for U.S. Soccer.  He refereed Adult, Youth, and high school soccer games in the Alameda and Contra Cost a county area.  He served as a District Commissioner for Region IV in Cal-North and as the Chairman of the Board of the California Youth Soccer Association-North, as a member of various committees for US Soccer and for US Youth Soccer.  Additionally, John served as a member of the Board of Directors of the California North Referee Association (CNRA) and for many years as a member of the U.S. Futsal Board of Directors.

For over 30 years, he also ran youth soccer tournaments, worked as a referee, taught referee instructional classes and trained youth referees, and served on the CYSA-N District IV Board of Directors, the CYSA-N Board of Directors and the US Futsal Board of Directors. He worked on developing the sport in California of soccer and Futsal, improving the training and development of all referees, and train young people as referees.  When John served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of CYSA-N it had over 100,000 players.  When he assisted on national committees for US Youth Soccer, US Soccer, and US Futsal he had an indirect impact on a great many more players, referees, and administrators.

John strongly believed in giving back to the community and found ways to volunteer in other, non-soccer, programs, despite working full time as an attorney, for the Supreme Court of California and, effectively, full time in soccer and futsal.  John left the world a better place for his efforts, and we will all miss him.

US Futsal Club Highlight Denison Cabral Futsal Academy (DCFA)

Denison Cabral Futsal Academy originated in 2006 after former  U.S. Futsal national team player, Denison Cabral, decided it was time for him to start spreading his knowledge and love for futsal to the youth. Located in Millersville, Maryland, The DCFA Academy teams have won countless state, regional, and national US Futsal championships. DCFA was the first regional club to take a US Futsal team to futsals home country of Brazil and participate in an international tournament.

Denison Cabral has been involved with futsal since he was a young boy playing the game in Florianopolis, Brazil. It is through futsal that he developed his crafty foot skills and passion for the game of soccer and futsal. Denison began his professional career in the United States with the Washington Warthogs of the Continental Indoor Soccer League in 1994 and then moved on to the Baltimore Blast of the Major Indoor Soccer League where he soon became a fan favorite.

During his years with Baltimore, Cabral won five championships (2003, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2009), was a six-time All Star, became the leading goal scorer in Blast history, and was MVP of the 2003 and 2009 championship series. Denison was  called up to the US National Futsal Team and played in the 2008 FIFA Futsal World Cup in his birth country Brazil. He later became an indoor soccer Hall of Famer. With Denison’s love for the Baltimore area youth soccer community, he started the Denison Cabral Futsal Academy known around the country as DCFA. His passion for the game is evident in every training session. Developing better soccer players through futsal and giving every child an opportunity to improve their skills is what he lives for. DCFA believes the quality is of the utmost importance in training sessions so that players can bring out the best in themselves and improve as players. This is seen as DCFA has trained numerous players who have gone to play for the US Youth National Team, professionally with DC United, and at the NCAA Division 1 level.

The club’s success on the court starts with the DCFA family. Denison explains that the DCFA club is like his extended family. He wants to ensure every child succeeds by improving throughout the season. Cabral states that with a new positive face, qualified staff, and a confident approach with the US Futsal National Teams, futsal is a bright growing sport in the country and DCFA will support it the whole way.

With developing a 7 month Futsal training program for the DCFA Academy players, they truly  do become a family and work hard on and off the court to achieve their individual and team goals. DCFA thanks US Futsal for putting on great competitions in all age groups and is excited for the growth that US Futsal is having in the United States. “For our club it is nice to be able to say that we have participated, competed, won and experienced many youth Futsal events in different parts of the country representing our community, our state and our country (when we went to Brazil).

Futsal in the US is growing and getting better in all different ways. We are excited about the bright future for our sport and for the amazing opportunities that the US is creating for our young and talented boys and girls who play futsal in America,” says Cabral. US Futsal provides many opportunities for clubs such as DCFA to compete in elite competitions throughout the country. US Futsal aims to develop world class futsal and soccer players by utilizing the benefits that the game of futsal has to offer. Players create a high soccer IQ through quick play scenarios, better technical skills, and many other important attributes through the game of futsal.

Denison creates a program for everyone at every level. No child is left behind and will be placed on an appropriate skill level team.

Tryouts for DCFA teams and programs begin this month. For more information, please visit https://www.denisonfutsal.com. Are you a club or league that wishes to be featured? Email aarono@futsal.org for more information.

PRESS RELEASE:   Oakland, CA – September 22, 2022
U.S. Futsal National Select Teams Bring Home Gold

The International Futsal Alliance World Championship was held in Ciutat Esportiva Blanes, just north of Barcelona, Spain from September 9-17, 2022.  The U.S. Futsal National Select Teams did not disappoint as the national select squads took home gold in the Men’s Open, 17U Boys and 14U Boys while the Open Women took home the silver medal.

This is the sixth time the tournament has been held, with previous hosts including China, Scotland, and Spain. After being unable to stage the event in 2020 and 2021 due to the global pandemic, the special edition brought together five different age categories to celebrate international futsal.  The Championship consisted of groups in the Open Men, Open Women, Youth Men (2001-2004), 17U Boys and 14U Boys.

14U Boys

In what turned out to be arguably the best match of the tournament, the 14U U.S. Futsal National Select Team were crowned champions by outlasting Scotland in the championship with a thrilling 7-6 victory. The US team had a small yet well rounded roster. Although offensive players Natnael Atkilti and Luis Oliviera won the Golden Boot award for most goals in the tournament their successes were not individual. Assisted by the team captain Aiden, whose leadership permeated all faucets of the team, Isaac who remained composed “with ice in his veins”, Luis the GK who allowed the least goals in his division and Matias with his ability to execute plays our 14UBoys team went undefeated!

“It was a goal to not just enjoy this experience, but to represent U.S. Futsal with class and create a standard of excellence. U.S. Futsal provided a platform for these young players to show the world what they can do and we are motivated to defend our title and promote the quality U.S. Futsal has to offer,” said head coach, Will Hanna, who hails from Alexandria Futsal.

17U Boys

The 17U U.S. Futsal National Select Team also brought home the gold with a tremendous 6-1 performance in the championship match against an Australian side that could not penetrate a stubborn US defense. GK Brandon Barrientos and offensive player Neo Ruiz both brought home the 17U Boys divisional awards for the Golden Glove and Golden Boot. Their successes were fueled by the strong defensive presence of Nathan Rodrigues, Isaiah Anaya and Mateo Anaya along with the offensive skill of Ricky Burton.  Their bench was not to be taken lightly both Matthew Matuidi and Jason Gonzalez did not let up on the defensive pressure while Tin Le and Dayne Kovatchev poured on the offensive skill. “I am extremely proud of the hard work and perseverance of this fine group of young men. I am certain that they will continue to grow and flourish after this remarkable opportunity that we all will remember for life,” said head coach, Mario Gonzalez.

Open Men

The US Men National Select Team went undefeated with 5 wins in the competition and convincingly defeated Australia in the championship match 8-1.  While the US dominated the men’s competition from start to finish in every match it had some tuff opposition from Scotland, who had defeated the US during the last World Championship in China. Defeating them to move on to the final was very satisfying.

Open Women

In the Open Women final the U.S. Futsal National Select faced a very well prepared and determined Australia side and fell 1-0 in a very impressive match that set the tone for the future of women’s international futsal. The Open Women’s goal was defended by 15-year-old, Ally Harrison, and 16-year-old, Claire Lindsey with Harrison taking home the golden glove award with only 1 goal allowed all tournament.

“Building a team from around the country allows us to showcase how the sport of futsal is growing in the US,”

said captain, Emily Roose. “It was both an honor and a privilege to represent the U.S. and play alongside these amazing women,” said captain, Lou Arseneault.

About the International Futsal Alliance

The International Futsal Alliance is a partnership of countries that play futsal, formed to offer high quality international tournaments across the World.  There is a limit of one member per country and membership is by invitation.  However, it is expected that all members will both offer tournaments, and support tournaments offered by other affiliated members in order to promote and develop the game.

The IFA Futsal World Championship is our flagship event and has welcomed representative teams from all the continents during its five tournaments to date.  All tournaments are played under FIFA rules and the majority of its members are affiliated to member organization of FIFA, while some are also members from the AMF.  Last year FIFA held its nineth Futsal World Cup in Lithuania.
