The 24th U.S. Futsal Northeast Regional Championship Concludes After more than 3 days of Intense Competition!

Atlantic City, New Jersey — The 24th. U.S. Futsal Northeast Regional Championship concluded Monday, February 17th after four days of intense and exciting competition. With 380 teams competing on 13 courts under one roof, this makes this the biggest Futsal Tournament in the United States if not the world.  “This is great news”, said Alex Para, President & CEO of U.S. Futsal, “because it shows how much Futsal is growing in the Northeast Region and how competitive Futsal has become”. With the growth of Futsal accelerating so rapidly over the last ten years, so has this competition. Teams from nine states from the Northeast competed this year. The Men’s Open competition was won by Brazuca F.C. from Pennsylvania -East, who played Safira F.C. from Massachusetts, who was last year’s Regional Championship winner. In the Women’s Open category, PAE Brazuca in a thriller beat SUSA Futsal Academy from (NYE)

U.S. Futsal Response to Coronavirus (COVID-19)

As of today, U.S. Futsal has decided to postpone or cancel a number of scheduled events through January 31, 2021.  This includes, but is not limited to, The Pacific Cup  some Regional Championships, all National Select Team programming and travel, all Coaching Education and Referee courses, unless they are held on line, and all Talent Identification Programs. We recognize that these decisions have a real impact on you and your own programming, but in the interest of ensuring the health and safety of the Futsal community, as well as that of the community-at-large, we also recommend that members review your own programming schedule and assess the risks and benefits of postponement and/or cancellation of your upcoming events. In closing, we strongly recommend that you follow the advice and direction of your local health department and follow their guidance. The Covid-19 may have removed teams, players, and coaches from the fields, but that won’t stop experienced coaches from their desire to gain an edge over their competition. They have taken advantage of many outreach continuing coach education in webinar type formats.  The true leaders in the game continue to sharpen their swords. In the sport of futsal – there is none better than Andreu Plaza.

With that in mind, U.S. Futsal is pleased to announce the opportunity to learn from one of the world’s best – FC Barcelona Coach Andreu Plaza. Plaza serves as both Technical Director for FC Barcelona, as well as overseeing the development of all youth players for the largest and most well known futsal academy in the world.

Barça were awarded the prize for ‘Best Team in the World in 2019’ in futsal, taking from 2018 winners Movistar Inter. It is the third time that Barça have claimed the award after previously being named the world’s best in 2012 and 2014. There can no debate about the decision with Barça in 2019 completing a memorable treble of the league, the Spanish Cup and the Copa del Rey as well as reaching the Final Four in the Champions League.

Coach Andreu Plaza completed the trio of awards for the Barça futsal team when he was named ‘Best Club Coach of 2019’. He succeeds Jesús Velasco as winner and becomes the second Barça coach to claim the prize following Marc Carmona’s win in 2012.

U.S. Futsal is announcing that it will cancel its 35th U.S. Futsal National Championship

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Oakland, CA – May 23, 2020

U.S. Futsal is announcing that it will cancel its 35^th U.S. Futsal National Championship that was scheduled to be hosted at the Atlantic City Convention Center, on July 9-12, 2020. This decision has stemmed from the fact that the COVID-19 pandemic, has and continues to affect all our futsal states.  Since our first priority is the health and safety of everyone, specially our players, families, coaches, referees, volunteers and dedicated staff. While we realize this will be a great disappointment to all and we realize some restrictions on assembly are lifted, we can’t foresee what the upcoming six weeks will mean for events with several thousand people in an enclosed area. U.S. Futsal has placed the safety of all concerned as or guiding factor behind our decision.

There are certainly encouraging signs but this may still  affect our Pacific Futsal Cup Tournament that is scheduled December 4-6, 2020 at the Hawaii Convention Center, our state cups in January of 2021. Our U.S. Futsal Regionals in February and March of 2021 may not be affected.

In regard to “Return to play resources”, members must abide by the requirements/guidelines established by their particular state and local public health officials. Beyond that, other resources to consider when planning for a return to play:

1. CDC’s “Guidance for Where You Live, Work, Learn, Pray and Play”
2. S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee’s “Guidance for Return to Training and Sport Event Planning”
3. S. Soccer’s “Return to Play Resources forthcoming and will be shared on www.futsal.org/coronavirus

We appreciate and acknowledge the willingness of so many people across the Nation accepting a short-term hardship for the long range good.  Please remember that by being responsible and following public health guidelines on physical distancing, hygiene habits and facemask use will more quickly find our ourselves back on the Futsal court and living normal lives once more.
